Happy Groundhog Day! It's that magical time of year again -- yes, February 2nd! Once again, we find ourselves waiting anxiously for the prediction from Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous groundhog.
According to legend, if Phil sees his shadow and jumps back into his burrow, then 6 more weeks of winter are sure to follow. If, however, he does not see his shadow, then an early spring will soon arrive.
This morning, Phil saw his shadow in frigid Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, nearly ensuring that this winter will be a long one. Though I am usually not one to question the logic of having a giant rodent predict the future, in the back of my mind, I can't help but think that Phil may have it wrong this year.
Here, in beautiful Austin, Texas, the sun is shining, birds are singing, flowers are blooming, cyclists and runners are out in force, and there is a smell of spring in the air. If Phil were here, perhaps he would see that not only will there not be more 6 more weeks of winter, but that spring has already arrived.
As for the failed prediction, I think jumping back in the burrow may have more to do with trying to get away from that guy with the top hat than anything else. So, Phil, if you're reading this, we've got a plane ticket with your name on it -- join us and enjoy the springtime!
