Monday was Martin Luther King Junior Day. I spent the day walking -- and running -- around the Capitol among people from around the nation and around the world. Everybody wants to be in Washington, DC right now. And I think half of everybody actually made the trip.
With only 15 hours until Barack Obama is sworn in as President of the United States, there is an unbelievable excitement in the air. Everyone in DC is soaking up the carnival atmosphere, wishing strangers well and feeling that we are all witnesses to history.
Yesterday, I was able to run to the Washington Monument without too much trouble. Today was a different story. There were at least twice as many people on the National Mall, so I couldn't get anywhere near the Washington Monument without constantly running over people. I didn't want to spoil anybody's Inauguration experience, so I re-routed my run.
Tomorrow morning, Natalie and I will be at the security checkpoint of our designated Inauguration entrance gate at 8 a.m. The Inauguration ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. EST and the swearing-in of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States will occur just before Noon. Tomorrow night, Natalie and I will attend the Southern Ball at the DC National Guard Armory, where President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will make an appearance.
Tomorrow will be a day that Natalie and I will remember for the rest of our lives. And we won't be alone in this sentiment. Stay tuned as we will post updates and photos from our Inauguration Day experience.
