Live from Chapel Hill - Day Two

October 24, 2007 by Josh Harvey

The_old_Well.jpgOn Day Two of of my Chapel Hill scouting trip, I got a big assist from a real live University of North Carolina student.  Curtis Davis, a New Orleans native, gave me an extended tour of the beautiful and historic UNC campus (thanks, Curtis!).  Although he's only 19, Curtis is already a BMOC (big man on campus).  Curtis took me all over campus and while we were over by Kenan Memorial Stadium (home of UNC football), Curtis saw football head coach Butch Davis driving around on a glorified golf cart.  Without a moment's hesitation, Curtis gave Coach Davis a shout-out (literally).

"What's up, Butchie?"

Coach Davis, not missing a beat, responded in kind.  "What's up, Curtis?"

The football coach knows Curtis by name?  Call me impressed.  I wish Les Miles knew my name.  "Impressed" is pretty much how I feel about everything I've seen during my two days in North Carolina.  Impressed with UNC.  Impressed with Chapel Hill.  Impressed with "The Triangle" (Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill).

UNC is a fantastic school -- and it's the nation's oldest public university.  The greater metro area is equally impressive.  The Triangle is a hotbed for research and entrepreneurship.  Plus, the Triangle really appreciates and supports its artists and the arts in general.  So it's obvious that Chapel Hill would be a great place for Storyville and I really hope that we can come out here in 2008.

Thursday will be my final day in Chapel Hill.  Tomorrow, I'll write about our progress in pinpointing potential Storyville locations.  We're going to have a find a spot in UNC section of Franklin Street in order for Storyville to work in Chapel Hill.  We've got a couple leads thus far, but that's it.  Stay tuned.
